During Fall 2007, the focus of institutional assessment was on creation of student learning outcomes for academic departments and programs. Academic departments and programs engaged in a full cycle of student learning assessment. They wrote department mission statements and goals, they determined student learning outcomes, and they assessed student learning.
After the semester ended, they had an opportunity to review their first sets of assessment data and submitted assessment reports early in the Spring semester. These reports asked them to describe the assessments they used and what they learned after they reviewed their assessment data, and how they planned to use information from that data. Two faculty/staff peers, plus the Executive Director of Assessment, reviewed the quality of every assessment report for 25 different criteria including the relationship of assessment to outcomes, the use of multiple measures with direct evidence of student learning, and use of data to inform the learning process.
Academic and non-academic services within Academic Affairs and services within Administration and Finance also created mission and goal statements. Some of these units created student learning outcomes or service targets, and some completed a full cycle of assessment - from setting goals and indicators to choosing assessment tools, gathering data, and using and sharing the results.
