On August 20, 2007, a series of faculty and staff lead assessment workshops kicked off the beginning of the new academic year. The celebration started with welcoming remarks from President Robert Davila and expressions of excitement from Provost Stephen Weiner for the challenges and triumps we anticipate for the upcoming new year.

"These workshops are one-day events designed for those who are not familiar with assessment and who need a basic, broad introduction to the topic. The program consists of presentations, interspersed with discussion and brief group and individual exercises that give participants opportunities to engage in and practice applying key concepts. These events do not include time to work on campus issues in detail."

Peggy Maki, Ph.D., specializes in assisting institutions integrate assessment of student learning into educational practices, processes and structures. Her work focuses on assessment within the context of accreditors' expectations for institutional effectiveness. Dr. Virginia Anderson's Bio:
Virginia Johnson Anderson is a professor of Biology at Towson University (TU)in Maryland. As chair of the biology department's assessment committee, she has taken an active role in campus and system wide university assessment in Maryland, served as an assessment consultant on several National Science foundation projects, and presented formative assessment workshops for the American Society of Microbiologists and the U.S. Peace Corps. Joining the Towson faculty in 1968 as an instructor, Anderson received her B.S. degree from Lamar University, her M.S. degree (1966) in science education from the University of Georgia and her Ed.D. degree in 1984 in science education from the University of Maryland.

"This comprehensive workshop provides participants with solid grounding on the MSCHE standards related to planning and assessment, both with respect to conceptual content and strategies for demonstrating compliance.
The workshop will review the fundamental elements of best practice in institutional planning, accompanied by examples from institutions engaged in those best practices. The central focus of this workshop will be how best to inform the institutional planning process with outcomes measures related to both student learning and institutional effectiveness.
